The Senate agreed on a government decree extending the authorization for the transfer of military assets to Ukraine until December 31, 2024, in accordance with Italy’s international obligations to provide assistance to Kyiv. This was reported by ANSA.
113 deputies voted for this decision, and 18 were against it. No one refrained from voting. Further, the Senate’s decision must still be supported by the Chamber of Deputies.
According to the publication, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is adamant in her intention to help Ukraine. However, there are also opponents of the supply of weapons to the Ukrainian Defense Forces – this is the opposition “5 Star Movement”.
Let us recall that at the end of November 2023, Ukraine and Italy began the first round of negotiations on bilateral security obligations. The countries will enter into a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, as provided for in the G7 Joint Declaration on Support for Ukraine.
In addition, in 2024, Italy will chair the Group of Seven, and Rome’s provision of security guarantees to Ukraine will be an important step towards bringing our state closer to membership in the European Union and NATO.
