Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) cite the words of the head of the Defense Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Andriy Kartapolov, who said that Ukraine deliberately shot down the Il-76, knowing that there were Ukrainian prisoners of war on board, and called for an indefinite suspension of all exchanges of prisoners of war.
In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is in New York at a meeting of the UN Security Council, called for an urgent convening of a UN Security Council meeting dedicated to this plane crash and accused Ukraine of terrorism.
ISW notes that such Russian accusations are intended to sow discontent in Ukraine and increase distrust in the Ukrainian government, which is consistent with other Russian information efforts aimed at weakening Ukraine domestically.
Meanwhile, the propaganda RIA Novosti reported that both black boxes of the Il-76 that fell in the Belgorod region were found, and France rejected Russia’s request to hold an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the disaster.
The meeting will begin at midnight on January 25, Kyiv time (at 17:00 Eastern American time).
On Wednesday, at a press conference at UN headquarters, the Russian Foreign Minister said that Russia demands an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. Lavrov wanted to personally take part in it. However, France, which chairs the Security Council, rejected this request and scheduled a meeting for Thursday afternoon.
Russia claims that the plane with Ukrainian prisoners of war on board was shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. An international investigation is demanded in Kyiv
