Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hopes that the French presidency of the Security Council will “ensure the holding of such a meeting.”
Russia has requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council over the downing of a military aircraft in the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this in New York at a press conference on Wednesday, January 24, Ukrinform reports.
The Russian official “expressed hope” that the French presidency of the Security Council will ensure that such a meeting will be held on Wednesday at 15:00 Eastern American time (at 22:00 Kyiv time – ed.).
As we have already written, an Il-76 military transport plane crashed in the Belgorod region. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that on board the plane were 65 alleged prisoners of the Armed Forces of Ukraine brought to the Belgorod region for exchange, six crew members and three accompanying persons. However, Ukrainian media reported that the Il-76 was carrying missiles for the S-300 complexes.
Additionally, after a Russian Il-76 military aircraft crashed near Belgorod, Russian propagandists said that on board “were Ukrainian prisoners being taken for exchange.” In particular, the published list of Ukrainian prisoners of war allegedly aboard the downed Il-76 includes those who were previously exchanged.
We would like to add that the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War has been urged not to spread fake news and said that it is now collecting information about this case.
