The Alternative for Germany party suffered its biggest weekly drop in popularity in almost two years.
In Germany, the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfN) party has lost popularity following recent nationwide demonstrations against the political force. An Insa poll for Bild newspaper, published on Tuesday, January 23, showed that support for the AfN had fallen to 21.5%, down from 23% the previous week.
However, the party remained in second place in the national ranking, with the CDU/CSU alliance leading with 30.5%.
A separate Forsa poll for media group RTL/ntv showed a two-point drop in the AfN to 20%, and the CDU/CSU rating to 31%.
According to Bild, the AfN suffered its biggest weekly drop in popularity in almost two years, while Insa leader Hermann Binkert said that the demonstrations against the party were supported by 37% of the population and that they “has an effect.”
At the same time, the combined support of the three coalition parties – the Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats – remained at 31%. This is down more than 20 percentage points from their overall performance in the 2021 general election. Chancellor Scholz’s SPD itself only got 13.5%.
Sarah Wagenknecht’s left-wing BSW party, with 3% support, is on par with the Free Voters in the polls and just one percentage point behind the ruling Free Democrats and the Left Party.
At the same time, according to polls, the AfN has stronger support than ever in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, where local elections will be held in the fall.
Let’s remember that hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of various cities after a report about a meeting attended by representatives of the Alternative for Germany, where they discussed a “remigration” scheme – that is, the expulsion of immigrants from the country. .
