Donald Trump’s only rival for the nomination from the Republican Party is Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and US permanent representative to the UN.
The US Republican Party now has only two potential presidential candidates – Donald Trump and Nikki Haley.
Haley is the first non-white woman and the fifth in the country’s history to seek the presidency of the United States. And Trump played an important role in his career.
Choose what you want
Hayley is 52 years old and comes from an Indian Sikh immigrant family. From 2005 to 2010, Haley served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, and in 2011 she became the state’s governor and served in this post until 2017.
In January 2017, Donald Trump, who had just become president of the United States, appointed her as the country’s permanent representative to the UN – despite the fact that Haley had heavily criticized her and did not support her candidacy in the elections.
At the UN, he is remembered for his harsh rhetoric against Russia and Iran, and for advocating sanctions against these two countries.
Under him, the United States withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. Haley continues to accuse the Council of “chronic anti-Israel bias,” and at the time of the US withdrawal announcement, called it “a cesspool of political bias.”
In December 2018, Nikki Haley left her post as ambassador to the UN. Welcoming him to the White House shortly before the end of his term, Donald Trump offered him any position in his administration.
“Choose what you want,” Trump said then. Haley laughed and didn’t go to the White House, but now nominated herself to run for president.
Support for Ukraine
On some domestic policy issues, Nikki Haley shares many of the same views as her rival Trump, particularly on immigration and fiscal issues.
For example, he considers it reasonable to reduce allocations for some social programs, including health insurance.
He is also anti-abortion, voting for strict bills, but unlike many fellow Republicans, he leans towards softer policies allowing abortions in cases of rape and incest.
On the international agenda, Haley, like Trump, has not unconditionally sided with Israel in any conflict in the Middle East.
After the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, he said that the United States should fully help Israel destroy the terrorists.
But he is completely uncompromising about the intentions of many Republicans, including Trump, to soften US policy toward Russia.
He thought the victory of Ukraine in the war with Russia is a guarantee of the international and national security of the United Statesand criticizes his fellow party members who have called for dialogue with the Kremlin or US neutrality in this conflict.
Trump is being criticized now
The day before, Haley publicly doubted that Donald Trump’s mental capacity allowed him to qualify for the presidency. The reason is that Trump, in one of his last speeches to supporters, confused him with Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat and former speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Trump has repeated several times that he – Nikki Haley – failed to properly secure the Capitol on the day of the attack on January 6, 2021, rejected the White House’s offer of help to increase the number of troops and security.
According to Trump, the leadership of the Congress at the time, and in particular Nikki Haley, was to blame for the attack with these consequences, but they were too dishonest to admit it.
In addition to the fact that Nikki Haley is a Republican, in January 2021 she did not hold any official position, and specifically on January 6 she was outside Washington.
Those around Trump later explained that their candidate had simply mixed up the names and meant Nancy Pelosi in his speech.
However, Hayley believes that you can be wrong once, and repeatedly mentioning her name in a context that has nothing to do with her is a worrying sign.
“It bothers me – and I’m not trying to disparage anyone – but when it comes to the weight of responsibility and pressure that comes with being president, we can’t allow someone to do this that we don’t have confidence in the psychological ability to handle it ,” he said. Nikki Haley, indicating the ages of Biden, 81, and Trump, 77.
According to analysts, Haley is a compromise for those who do not want Donald Trump to return to the White House.
The only question is whether they consider that he can defeat Joe Biden in the election, because they want to see the Democrats in the White House even less than Trump.
According to many analysts, during the primaries, which will last until September this year, he will have to prove not his superiority over Trump, but his ability to give the fight to Biden.
