The Times of Israel reported the circumstances of the death, citing Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari.
According to the IDF, the attack took place in the central Gaza Strip, about 600 meters from the Israeli border, where the Israeli military had mined two two-story buildings to blow them up to create a buffer zone.
Hamas militants fired a rocket-propelled grenade launcher located near the houses at the tank, likely causing the detonation of the charges placed inside. This led to the collapse of houses in which there were soldiers. At the same time, the military does not rule out that the militants could have carried out separate attacks on houses. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Hagari said the attack killed 21 soldiers, all of them reservists. The Times of Israel notes that these are the largest single losses of the Israel Defense Forces since the start of the ground operation in the Gaza Strip. The publication’s sources clarified that as a result of the attack, several soldiers were injured, at least one of them is in serious condition.
The Times of Israel also reports that on January 22, three more IDF soldiers were killed during fighting in the southern sector. Thus, Israeli losses in one day amounted to 24 people. In total, the IDF has lost 219 troops since the start of the operation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, commenting on what happened, called January 22 “one of the most difficult days since the beginning of the war.” He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and also said that the IDF was investigating the incident.
Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking another 240 hostage. The Israeli army, in response to Hamas, launched strikes on the Gaza Strip and then launched a ground operation. According to the Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, more than 25 thousand people have been killed in the strip since the start of the war.
On January 22, Axios, citing unnamed Israeli officials, reported that Israel had offered Hamas a two-month halt to hostilities. Israel’s new proposal includes the gradual release of all hostages held by militants and the return of the bodies of those killed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, as well as the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the main population centers of the enclave.
