The Alliance’s Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise begins this week and runs until May. Moscow is conducting an information operation to portray these maneuvers, which are a response to Russian aggression against Ukraine and Russian threats against NATO members, as provocative. This is stated in a new report from the American Institute for the Study of War.
It is noted that the first reaction of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Steadfast Defender 2024 training was a statement that these maneuvers seemed to be increasingly provocative and aggressive in nature. The department noted that NATO continues to “demonstrate force” on “Russia’s doorstep.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that Moscow allegedly regularly proposed de-escalation initiatives to NATO, called on the Alliance to abandon “provocative actions” and allegedly moved Russian military exercises inland.
ISW added that Russian sources claimed that NATO was using the exercises to “wind up” and incite the Baltic states to prepare for war with the Russian Federation and characterized such exercises as “a series of provocations.”
Let us remind you that in 2024 the North Atlantic Alliance will hold its largest exercises in the last decade. Exercise Steadfast Defender 2024, which will be held from next week to May, will involve about 90,000 troops from NATO member countries and Sweden.
