The Russians have re-laid mines around the perimeter of the power plant that was removed in November.
The Russian military has again placed mines around the perimeter of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced this on Friday, January 19, in a statement on the organization’s website.
“The mines along the perimeter of the Zaporizhia NPP, in the buffer zone between the facility’s internal and external fencing, previously discovered by the IAEA team and seized in November 2023, are now back in place. This is a closed area which is not accessible to operational personnel of the plant,” the statement said.
Grossi stressed that the existence of the mines was contrary to the IAEA’s safety standards.
The IAEA also said in its report that the Zaporizhzhya NPP lost direct backup power to its reactor units for several hours this week, the latest incident that highlights the ongoing risks to nuclear safety and security at the site .
Backup power was restored eight hours later after two more backup power transformers came online.
“The weak energy status of the plant remains one of the main threats to nuclear safety and security at the site,” said Grossi, adding that the situation in this regard remains very alarming.
Let’s recall that in November last year the IAEA also recorded missile launches near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
