The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv today, January 19, chose a preventive measure for businessman and owner of the investment company Concorde Capital Igor Mazepa in the form of detention until February 27 with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of more than UAH 349 million.

Thus, the court partially granted the prosecutor’s request. This was reported by the publication “Public”.
It is noted that the prosecutor, due to risks (including the likelihood of hiding from law enforcement officers and influencing witnesses), asked for a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting a bail of UAH 700 million.
At the same time, the defense insisted that the detention was illegal, arguing that there were no grounds for the detention, and the businessman did not cross the border to escape. According to the lawyer, the businessman had already left Ukraine before and returned on time.
Also, the lawyer, commenting on the information given in the arrest report that the businessman tried to avoid law enforcement agencies, said that the detention at the border was “an orchestrated staging to give Mazepa’s travel abroad the character of avoiding pre-trial investigation.”
The prosecution reported that, according to the investigation, Mazepa, having received information about criminal prosecution, decided to leave the country.
The lawyer also argued that this case “is not actually under investigation by the DBI.”
According to him, the DBR should not deal with this matter, since the State Geocadastre is not a law enforcement agency – if state land is alienated, then NABU should deal with it.
If you wish, then transfer it to NABU and investigate there. Because there are questions about the acquisition of state property,” he emphasized.
The defense also argued that:
- there is no justification for suspicion;
- the amount of bail (700 million UAH) requested by the prosecution exceeds the amount of damage (according to prosecutors – more than 7 million UAH). The lawyer stated that the principle of proportionality was not observed.
Mazepa himself said that he was confident in the position presented by his defense. And he added that prosecutors and investigative authorities “could set a dangerous precedent.”
Mazepa’s defense also asked to bring in guarantors, but the court rejected the request.
