Hungary shows complete disrespect and violation of the EU’s strategic interests, the resolution said.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the European Council and EU member states to examine Hungary’s possible violation of the bloc’s values. It was reported on the website of the European Parliament on Thursday, January 18.

The corresponding document was supported by 345 representatives, 104 voted against and another 29 abstained.

MEPs expressed deep concern about the further erosion of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary, especially due to the recently adopted so-called “protection of national sovereignty” package, which has been compared to notorious “Russian foreign agents.” law”.

MEPs also condemned the actions of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who last December blocked an important decision to review the EU’s long-term budget, including the aid package for Ukraine, “with disrespect and violation of strategic interests of the EU and the principle of sincere cooperation. .” The EU should not be subjected to this blackmail, they emphasize.

The European Parliament called on the European Council to determine whether Hungary has committed “serious and persistent violations of EU values” under the more direct procedure set out for Article 7(2) of the EU Treaty.

The resolution deplores the European Commission’s decision to release up to €10.2 billion of previously frozen funds despite Hungary’s failure to implement necessary reforms to ensure judicial independence.

In addition, MEPs condemned the Hungarian government’s systematic discriminatory practices across academia, journalists, political parties and civil society in the distribution of funds.

The European Parliament is also questioning whether the Hungarian government will be able to fulfill its responsibilities as part of the EU Council vote in the second half of 2024, warning that if the position of European Council president is vacant, those responsibilities will fall into Hungarian. prime minister

“MEPs ask the Council to find an acceptable solution to mitigate these risks and call for the reform of the Council’s decision-making process to stop the abuse of the veto and blackmail,” said European Parliament.

As is known, the resolutions of the European Parliament are not binding.

before Correspondent.net wrote that Hungary could be left without a voice in the European Union and the possibility of unfreeze funds. The first step towards this is the adoption of a resolution by the European Parliament.
