Beijing refused to approve a meeting between Prime Minister Li Qiang and the Ukrainian leader on Swiss territory. The delegation from the PRC in Switzerland had ample opportunity to sit opposite their colleagues from Kyiv in Bern or Davos at the World Economic Forum. And any meeting between representatives of these countries “would satisfy the long-standing hope of the Ukrainian authorities to have frank personal discussions with Chinese top officials.” Politico writes about this.
The media indicates that earlier the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Ermak, said that it was very important for the PRC to join the peace negotiations. He also hinted that Zelensky would have the opportunity to communicate with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang. However, the meeting never took place.
The article also says that this could be the latest sign that Beijing does not intend to seek an end to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The Chinese authorities sided with the aggressor country and supplied the occupiers with materials for military purposes.
It is noted that the PRC’s decision not to hold a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation seemed intentional and not the result of scheduling problems.
Let us remind you that China will not participate in the third summit of the Ukrainian Peace Formula in Malta, although a delegation from the PRC attended a similar event in Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba then called it a super breakthrough.
