The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this today, January 17, during a speech in the European Parliament, reports the European Pravda publication.
European Commission representative Eric Mummer subsequently noted at a briefing that the start of the screening process does not provide for a specific date.
The President said that the screening will now begin – which means the screening will now begin. This is not some kind of formal process where there are specific dates, etc. This means that we are now starting to work on the screening process,” he said.
Representative of the European Commission Ana Pisonero clarified that the start of screening concerns not only Ukraine, but also Moldova, with which the European Union also decided to begin accession negotiations. Pisonero said “the screening process will begin immediately.”
The first step is to form multidisciplinary teams covering all acquis (EU legal acts – ed.). You know that the screening process means analytical verification of the EU acquis. You know that the EU acquis, when it comes to pre-entry negotiations, is divided into 33 sections,” she noted. “So the first step is to form interdisciplinary teams, and work will begin immediately.”
Today, January 16, during a visit to Davos, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky met von der Leyen. During this meeting, the parties agreed on pre-entry screening of Ukrainian legislation.
Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Igor Zhovkva said that, by agreement, screening should begin as quickly as possible, as soon as the Ukrainian delegation arrives in Brussels – no later than in a week.
