Funding has been suspended for reasons including concerns about LGBTG+ rights, academic freedom and asylum rights.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that about 20 billion euros in EU funds will remain frozen for Hungary until Budapest fulfills all the necessary conditions. He said this while speaking at the European Parliament on January 17, European Pravda reports.
The head of the EC recalled that in May last year, Hungary adopted a new justice reform law, taking into account several recommendations of the European Commission. According to him, this law strengthens the independence of the judiciary and limits the possibility of political interference in the judicial system. Its adoption is necessary for Hungary to fulfill the conditions for receiving funds from the cohesion fund. However, around 20 billion euros remain frozen for Budapest.
“They were suspended for reasons that included concerns about LGBTG+ rights, academic freedom and the right to asylum. Some of them were blocked as part of the conditionality mechanism. And they will remain blocked until fulfilled of Hungary have all the necessary conditions,” he said. Ursula von der Leyen.
We remind you that Hungary has said that it can lift its veto on the EU aid package for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros if the fund is reviewed every year.
It was also reported that the European Parliament is proposing to strip Hungary of its voting rights.
