The ex-chancellor called the disagreement over the implementation of the Minsk agreements one of the reasons for the current war in Ukraine.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suggested that her resignation as prime minister may have influenced Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch a full -scale invasion of Ukraine. He spoke about it in an interview with RND.

“Perhaps my resignation has contributed to (Russia’s invasion), such as the elections in France, the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the decline in the implementation of the Minsk agreements,” the former chancellor suggested.

He admitted that at the end of his tenure as Chancellor he had no power.

“It is clear that I will no longer be in office, and therefore I can only say that the various attempts (to resolve the conflict) over the past year have been fruitless,” Merkel added.

The ex-chancellor also called the disagreement over the implementation of the Minsk agreements one of the reasons for the current war in Ukraine.

“Perhaps my resignation has contributed, like the elections in France, to the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the failure to implement the Minsk agreements,” Merkel suggested.

When asked if Merkel would agree to the role of mediator in negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, she replied:

“So far, this issue has not been raised.”

The ex-chancellor also noted that in the last years of his tenure, Vladimir Putin was not ready for negotiations in a format similar to Normandy.

Recall that the former German Chancellor, in the first interview since he resigned, said that “he does not blame himself” for Russia starting a full-scale war against Ukraine.
