Colonel Volkov adopted systems that, as happened during the execution of the contract, did not allow him to successfully solve the problems of combating unmanned aerial vehicles.
In Russia, the head of the maritime department of the Russian National Guard, Colonel Sergei Volkov, was sentenced to six years in a general colony of the regime in the case of providing low-quality radars to protect the Kerch Bridge from drones. Volkov was also banned from holding public office for two years. The Russian publication Mediazona reported this today, January 16.
The military man, who was under house arrest, was taken into custody in the courtroom. Volkov was found guilty of abuse of power, which brought serious consequences. The state prosecution requested that the colonel be sentenced to seven years in prison, be stripped of his rank and awards, and also be prohibited from holding positions with organizational, administrative and economic functions within the three years, but the court made a slightly different decision. .
As the lawyer told the court, Volkov “took part in battles, had 14 military awards, received a severe concussion, because of which he stammered a lot,” and “was forced to take care of his sick father. “
It was reported that the detention and arrest of the head of the maritime department of the Russian Guard became known at the end of March 2023.
The Rostov-on-Don Radiocommunication Research Institute and the aforementioned department entered into a contract for 395.5 million rubles for the supply of two radar systems to combat UAVs, which can be used, among other things, to protect the Kerch Bridge.
According to investigators, Volkov adopted systems that, as happened during the execution of the contract, did not allow them to successfully solve the problem of combating unmanned aerial vehicles.
During the sentencing, the judge made it clear that the complex purchased by Volkov was operational, but not suitable for protection against drones.
Volkov did not admit guilt, and his lawyer added that the department bought radars from a monopolist in this area.
The investigator argued that Volkov’s guilt was confirmed by the testimony of the witness and his attempt to hide his phone during the search.
We remind you that the Kerch Bridge was hit at least twice. In October 2022, a powerful explosion occurred here, causing great destruction. Later, the SBU said it was a special operation. And in July 2023, the Kerch Bridge was successfully attacked by Sea Baby sea drones.
