If the West wants Ukraine to succeed in the war against the Russian Federation, it must be helped with weapons and means, von der Leyen emphasized.
The aggressor country Russia has failed to achieve its strategic goals in Ukraine. This was said by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in a special speech to the participants of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 16, reports Ukrinform.
“Russia is experiencing a failure in strategic goals. This is, first and foremost, a military failure. We must not forget: when Russia entered Ukraine, many feared that Kiev would fall within a few days , and the rest of the country during the week. This did not happen,” – he said.
On the contrary, according to von der Leyen, Russia has lost almost half of its military capabilities. Ukraine denied the Russian Federation from half of the occupied territories, and also pushed back the Russian Black Sea Fleet and reopened sea corridors for the delivery of grain to the world.
The head of the European Commission noted that Russia has also failed in the economic field. European and international sanctions isolated it from modern technologies and innovations; the Russian Federation has become dependent on China.
In addition, Russia experienced a diplomatic failure. Finland joins NATO, Sweden will follow. Ukraine is moving closer to the goal of EU membership, von der Leyen added.
“All this is to say that Ukraine can win this war. But we must give them the strength to fight. Ukrainians need prospective funding to 2024 and beyond. They need a constant supply of arms. They need to know that they are fighting for a better future for their children. This is the best future of Ukraine, the name is Europe,” the EC President emphasized.
We remind you that the commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Colonel General Alexander Syrsky, said that the Russians did not achieve the goals they set in recent months. The offensive of the Russian army failed.
Julian Röpke, a columnist for the German publication Bild, previously wrote about the failure of the winter offensive of Russian troops in Ukraine. According to him, three months after the start of the attacks in the Donetsk and Kharkov regions, the occupiers have achieved nothing but huge losses in both personnel and equipment.
