The Australian Army’s MRH-90 helicopter was withdrawn 14 months ahead of schedule following the accident.
Australia decided to dismantle and dispose of the Taipan helicopters instead of transferring them to Ukraine. ABC reported this on Monday, January 15.
The Australian Army’s MRH-90 helicopters will be retired in September 2023, 14 months ahead of schedule, after four soldiers crashed during training in Queensland two months earlier.
They were originally scheduled to be retired from service in 2037, but the European-designed helicopter has run into problems that have led to the grounding of the entire fleet over the years.
Ukraine submitted a formal request for delivery of the MRH-90 on December 19, 2023, despite it having documented safety and operational problems.
The publication states that the Australian government intends to scrap 45 helicopters.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasily Miroshnichenko said he “hopes that there is still a possibility (of the helicopter transfer), edit… because we haven’t received a response yet.”
On the secondary market, each helicopter costs about $20 million.
As we wrote earlier, Argentina is considering the possibility of transferring to Ukraine two Mi-171E multi-purpose helicopters, purchased from Russia.
