It is becoming increasingly difficult for the Russians to penetrate Ukrainian air defenses. At the same time, sanctions are likely to worsen the quality of Russian missiles.
The Ukrainian military has adapted to Russian tactics of missile and UAV strikes, but the Russians continue to experiment with efforts to penetrate Ukrainian air defenses. This was stated in a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on Sunday, January 14.
Analysts, in particular, cite a Russian blogger who states that Russian troops have recently launched attacks on Ukraine using various types of missiles, especially the Kh-47 Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles. The blogger also claims that Russian forces launched undetected aerial decoys and Shahed drones to bypass Ukrainian air defense systems so that Russian forces could launch successful missile strikes.
At the same time, ISW experts observed Russian forces experimenting with various combinations of drone and missile strikes in an attempt to penetrate Ukrainian air defense systems as Ukrainian forces adapted to Russian strike patterns .
The Institute also does not exclude that Russia may increase its efforts to acquire ballistic missiles from abroad, since in some cases this type of missile may be more successful in hitting targets in Ukraine.
“On January 14, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuriy Ignat said the sanctions would likely degrade the quality of Russian missiles. This could further hamper Russia’s ability to launch a successful series of strikes against Ukraine,” the ISW report said.
We remind you that on the night of January 1 against January 13, the Russians carried out another massive missile attack on Ukraine. Initially, missiles of the X-101/555/55 type were launched from the Tu-95MS. Later it became known that Kinzhal missiles appeared in the air, launching MiG-31 aircraft. 40 enemy targets were fired upon, with the Ukrainian air defense firing eight cruise missiles. The military noted that Russia used cruise, aeroballistic, ballistic, aviation, anti-aircraft guided missiles and attack UAVs.
At the same time, more than 20 of the 40 enemy targets were not included in the statistics of those shot down, but also did not reach their goals. This is explained by the increasingly low quality of Russian missiles, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat told the telethon.
