Taiwan election: a candidate unacceptable to China wins

The majority of votes were won by current Vice President Lai Chin-te, who China has repeatedly called a “separatist.”

In Taiwan, incumbent Vice President Lai Ching-te will win the majority of votes in the presidential election on Saturday, January 13, international media reported.

He represents the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Lai declared that Taiwan was already a sovereign state, so there was no need to declare its independence. The current President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, whose representative is Lai, follows the same position.

Therefore, China repeatedly called Lai a “dangerous separatist” and refused negotiations. The politician himself said he sees Lai’s future relationship with China as fraternal, but plans to further strengthen the island’s defenses.

Let’s remember that in the event of an armed conflict between China and Taiwan, the damage to the global economy could reach $10 trillion or 10% of global GDP.
