The governments of Denmark, Germany, New Zealand and South Korea put their names to the statement after the strikes involving British and US military forces backed by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.
Ten countries issued a statement late Friday, January 12, describing the strikes as “collective self-defense.” The six countries involved in today’s military operations in Yemen, along with four of their allies, issued a joint statement, Sky news reports.
Thus, the governments of Denmark, Germany, New Zealand and South Korea added themselves to the statement after the strikes involving British and US military forces with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.
The statement said the strikes were carried out “in accordance with the inalienable right of individual and collective self-defense, consistent with the UN Charter.”
The authors of the statement recalled the decisions of the UN Security Council on December 1 and January 10 that condemned Houthi attacks on commercial and commercial ships.
“In response to the Houthis’ continued unlawful, dangerous and destabilizing attacks on shipping, including commercial vessels, transiting the Red Sea, the armed forces of the United States and the United Kingdom, in support of the Netherlands, Canada, Bahrain and Australia, carried out joint strikes in accordance with the right to individual and collective self-defense, consistent with the UN Charter, for a range of objectives in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, ” said the statement.
The precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities the Houthis use to threaten global trade and the lives of international sailors in one of the world’s most critical waterways.
“Today’s action demonstrated our shared commitment to freedom of navigation, international trade and protecting the lives of seafarers from unlawful and unjustified attacks.
We remind you that tonight the United States and Britain launched strikes against the Houthis. Later, US President Joe Biden issued a statement on this matter. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also confirmed that the British air force had carried out targeted strikes on military targets.
