The operation to protect ships in the Red Sea, which will involve at least three anti-aircraft destroyers or frigates, could begin by the end of February.
The EU intends to send at least three warships to protect merchant ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthis in the Red Sea. Politico reported this on Thursday, January 11, citing a document from the European External Affairs Service.
It was noted that the EU should create a “new EU operation” that would “operate in a wider area of activity, from the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf.” The operation to protect the ships could begin at the end of February.
The publication indicates that the EU plans to follow the example of the United States and its allies on the issue of protecting ships in the Red Sea.
The exact scale and composition of the operation will reportedly depend on further operational planning, but it will include at least three anti-aircraft destroyers or frigates with multi-role capabilities for at least a year.
Let’s remember that the Houthis have warned all international shipping companies against cooperating with Israeli ports and warned that they will attack all ships going there.
In addition, Yemen’s Houthis attacked a tanker in the Red Sea.
