36 million metric tons of grain were shipped in 2023, up 50% from last year.
Romania’s Black Sea port of Constanta recorded its highest grain exports in 2023, thanks to increased shipments from Ukraine and infrastructure projects funded by the European Union. It was reported by Reuters.
Last year, 36 million metric tons of grain were shipped, up 50% from the previous year.
Ukrainian grain accounted for about 40% of the total, or 14 million tons, compared to 13 million tons at the end of November and 8.6 million tons for all of 2022.
As you know, Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of grain in the world and Constanta has become the most alternative export route for Kyiv after the full invasion of Russia in February 2022.
Traffic fell in July as Russia repeatedly began targeting river ports across the Danube from Romania.
In August, Ukraine created a shipping corridor from its ports spanning the western Black Sea coast of Romania and Bulgaria, shortly after Russia withdrew from a grain export agreement.
Romania is reportedly planning to increase its transit capacity for Ukrainian grain to four million tons per month and is upgrading rail and road infrastructure in and around the port.
According to the port authority, EU-funded investment projects in and around Constanta are worth €546.8 million ($598.47 million). The remaining projects worth 218 million euros are considered.
Earlier it was reported that Romania will increase the transit of Ukrainian grain.
Let’s remember that the UN identified the problems of an alternative grain corridor, saying that the UN is looking for solutions to ensure safe, secure and sustainable civil shipping in the Black Sea.
