The invaders hoped that the creation of the so-called “buffer zone” would save the Belgorod region from shelling.
The Russians renewed calls for a large-scale offensive operation in the Kharkov region to create a “buffer zone” in the Belgorod region. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Analysts noted that this is being done despite the inability of the Russian military to conduct an operation to occupy significant territory in the Kharkov region in the near future.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 9 that Russian troops will do everything to prevent Ukrainian encroachment on the Belgorod region. Russian sources, against the backdrop of a statement by the Kremlin spokesman, called on Russian troops to create a “buffer zone” up to 15 kilometers deep in the Kharkov region to push Ukrainian MLRS and artillery away from border of the Belgorod region.
Russian ultranationalists have regularly called for a similar operation in the summer of 2023 amid widespread discontent over cross-border raids by pro-Ukrainian forces in the Belgorod region.
The ISW calls it a large-scale operation, requiring a force much larger and significantly better resourced than the troops massed across Ukraine’s borders, not least of all in the Belgorod region.
Analysts believe that the Russian military is now capable of conducting tactical actions in the Kharkov region. And they will serve to divert attention and organize Ukrainian forces from possible Russian operational efforts in the direction of Kupyansk.
We remind you that the Russian troops continue active offensive operations in the Kupyansky forest, trying to break the defenses of the Ukrainian troops and advance in the direction of Kupyansk, but the Defense Forces managed to resist the attacks of the enemy.
