The collection of signatures for the petition will last until January 12, after which it will be given to the head of the European Parliament.
Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa has initiated a petition to strip Hungary of its voting rights in the Council of the European Union. This is what he says reported on social network X on Tuesday, January 9.
Sárvamaa called the petition historic and emphasized that procedures in accordance with Part 2 of Article 7 of the EU Treaty have never been violated against Hungary.
This article provides for the possibility of suspending certain rights, including a vote in the Council of the EU, regarding a state that has repeatedly violated the values of the European Union – respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy , equality and the rule of law.
The MEP believes that “the EU’s decision-making mechanism is stuck only because of Viktor Orban.”
“The only way to make it work is to deprive Orban of the right to vote in the Rada,” Sarvamaa said.
The petition states that Hungary has been repeatedly criticized for undermining the rule of law, and “following Hungary’s actions aimed at disrupting the decision-making process of EU member states at the European Council meeting in December, we believe it is time for the European Parliament. to act.”
The collection of signatures for the petition will last until January 12, after which it will be given to the head of the European Parliament, Roberti Metsoli.
“It will also send a signal to all member states that the EU will not tolerate any deviation from the rule of law or violation of the principle of sincere cooperation enshrined in the Treaties,” the Finnish MP said.
We remind you that Hungary has placed a new request to remove the veto of 50 billion euros for Ukraine. According to the Hungarian proposal, the EU should annually provide Ukraine with 12.5 billion euros in the form of grants and loans, up from the 50 billion euros proposed by the European Commission over four years. But only if the fund is reviewed every year.
As is known, in December Hungary vetoed a mega-package that included aid to Ukraine, spending on migration programs, and funding for the EU Solidarity Fund and Defense.
