Almost two-thirds of Germans – 64.3% – want Scholz to hand over the chancellorship to the current head of the Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius.
Most Germans want to replace the current chancellor and sympathize with the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This is confirmed by the results of a survey conducted by the Insa Institute for the publication Bild.
In the ranking of top German politicians, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remains in first place by a wide margin. Chancellor Olaf Scholz is considered “the most unpopular head of government of all time” after two years in office.
About two-thirds of Germans (64.3%) want Scholz to hand over the chancellorship to Pistorius before the next federal election (autumn 2025) and only 24.6% are against. Even among supporters of the Social Democratic Party, which includes both politicians, 47.9% support such a round compared to 47.1% who are against.
The popularity of Boris Pistorius slightly improved (by 1 percent) the performance of his party, which now has only 16% of the people’s support. It is 15 percentage points lower than the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and 7 percentage points lower than the Alternative for Germany (with a rating of 23%).
If the Bundestag elections were held today, the liberals would also enter it with their 5% (now they, along with the SPD and the Greens, are part of the ruling coalition).
At the same time, the Left with 4% support will not enter parliament.
The representative survey by the INSA public opinion research institute was conducted from January 2 to January 5, 2024 and covered 1,204 respondents.
It was previously reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz may leave the post of Chancellor of Germany early.
Let’s add that the most popular German politician in 2023 is Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. 42% of people said they wanted Pistorius to have more influence on German politics.
