Japan earthquake: death toll rises to 92

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which occurred on January 1 in Japan, has killed 92 people. More than 460 people were injured. ABC News reports.

Authorities in Ishikawa Prefecture, the worst-hit region, said 55 people died in the city of Wajima and 23 in Suzu. Thirteen more were reported in five surrounding cities.

A search and rescue operation is underway in the disaster zone, involving emergency services, police and around 4,600 military personnel. There are still many people under the collapsed buildings waiting for help.

Tremors still continue in the part of the country that was hit by the earthquake.
