Washington and Seoul increased the size of joint exercises last year amid rising tensions on the peninsula.
South Korean troops conducted joint military exercises with the United States near the North Korean border using heavy weapons. This was reported by Reuters news agency.
The exercise between the South Korean Army’s motorized rifle brigade and the US Army’s Stryker armored brigade was designed to test and improve combat readiness.
The drills lasted for a week – from December 29 to January 4. The allies dramatically increased the size and intensity of joint exercises last year amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula as Pyongyang uses both long-range ballistic missiles and tactical weapons designed to strike targets in the Pacific.
The joint exercise involved more than 110 pieces of military equipment, including South Korean army tanks, anti-aircraft artillery and combat ground vehicles, as well as American attack vehicles and combat vehicles.
Earlier, the United States warned that North Korea’s use of nuclear weapons would lead to “the end of the regime” of Kim Jong-in.
The North Korean leader responded that “Pyongyang will not hesitate to launch a nuclear strike in the event of enemy provocation.”
