The adopted resolution of the socio-economic committee supports the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and makes recommendations for assistance in reconstruction after the war.
The European Economic and Social Committee supported granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. The decision was supported by 200 deputies – almost all of whom took part in the plenary meeting of the committee, according to Ukrinform on Thursday, June 16.

It was noted that the committee also adopted recommendations for European institutions and governments of EU member states regarding the provision of assistance to Ukraine in reconstruction after the war.
“The EESC calls on the European Council to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate in the EU at a meeting on June 23-24, 2022. Candidate status should be granted to Ukraine without harming the process of entry of countries into Western Balkans. The EESC is promoting the creation of a system of gradual integration measures based on the acquis communitaire (EU law – ed.), “The resolution said.
The document also contains specific recommendations for creating conditions for the adaptation of Ukrainian refugees to the EU labor market and ensuring their access to social services, including education and health care.
The resolution emphasizes the need to mobilize international assistance to support the Ukrainian economy in the current difficult conditions, as well as for the large-scale restoration of social and other important infrastructure destroyed as a result of the Russian aggression.

As reported, the European Commission conducted a preliminary debate on the applications of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia for granting candidate status for EU membership. According to media reports, applications of Ukraine and Moldova will be approved with conditions.
The European Commission is expected to make a decision on the countries ’applications on June 17. But EU leaders will discuss the issue next week.
