Against the backdrop of the massive shelling of Ukraine, NATO members in the EU agreed to buy 1000 missiles for the Patriot air defense system.
The North Atlantic Alliance announced Wednesday, January 3, that it will help buy up to 1,000 Patriot missiles for European NATO members to better defend their territory as Russia continues its airstrikes in Ukraine. Associated Press reports.
NATO’s support and supply agency said it would support a group of countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain in acquiring the Patriot, which is used to defend against cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft.
It was noted that the value of the contract could be around $5.5 billion. This purchase should help allies allocate more of their defense systems to Ukraine.
“Russian missile and drone attacks on ordinary people and cities show how important modern air defense is. Increasing the production of ammunition is key to Ukraine’s security and our security,” said the Secretary of NATO General Jens Stoltenberg.
As an organization, NATO only provides Ukraine with non-lethal support, but its members send arms and ammunition individually or in groups.
Let’s recall that earlier the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, said that Ukraine needs more Patriot air defense systems to effectively repel Russian attacks.
The day before it became known that Ukraine and the United States agreed to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense.
