The British company Essar Oil, after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, stopped all imports of fuel from the aggressor country. However, the British provided a line of credit to Litasco, the oil trading division of Russia’s Lukoil. This was reported by The Guardian with reference to data from submitted reports.
It is noted that Litasco itself is not subject to sanctions, so the agreement, which is actually a credit line, allows Essar to buy fuel and pay later.
The media indicates that Litasco is wholly owned by Lukoil. The owner of this Russian oil company, Vagit Alekperov, was subject to sanctions back in April 2022. Lukoil is under sanctions in the United States, but British and European sanctions do not apply to it. And Litasco is not under sanctions in any country.
The British have already stated that their company stopped importing Russian fuel many months before the government deadline and increased its own production, and also denied that it imports any fuel of Russian origin, because it considers sanctions policy.
Let us remind you that on November 13, bypassing the embargo, a tanker delivered 50 thousand tons of Russian oil products to the US Naval Base Norfolk, located on the east coast of the United States, on a direct flight from Novorossiysk. The ship itself that delivered the oil is owned by a company registered in Hamburg, Germany.
