In 2023, support for the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which Scholz represented, dropped from 20% to 15%.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz may leave his post as Chancellor of Germany early. This is due to the low level of support for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), reports Bild.
A survey by the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon showed that by 2023, support for the party had fallen from 20 to 15%.
According to analysts, a key factor in the SPD fiasco is that only one in five Germans rate the job of the party representative, Chancellor Scholz, positively.
The Italian newspaper La Repubblica, citing sources of information, writes that Scholz may retire as early as 2024. His successor may be Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who recently topped the ranking of the most popular German politicians.
The reason for the Chancellor’s resignation may be the scandal that broke out in 2020 with Wirecard and its boss Jan Marsalek (now he is probably hiding in Moscow). At the time, Scholz headed the Federal Ministry of Economics and was responsible for the financial regulator, which overlooked the biggest fraudulent scheme in German history since World War II.
Scholz has always denied responsibility for this financial scandal. At the same time, the German Ministry of Finance refused the request to make public the contents of the meetings between Marsalek and representatives of the department.
It will be remembered that the most popular German politician in 2023 is the Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius. 42% of people said they wanted Pistorius to have more influence on German politics.
