The earthquake was centered about 30 kilometers east of Wajima, with an initial depth of 16 kilometers, according to the weather agency.
The earthquake and tremors disrupted public transport to and from the affected areas, all high-speed trains on the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku lines were temporarily suspended, and airlines also canceled 25 flights.
The agency warned that earthquakes with a seismic intensity of around 7 could return next week, especially in the next few days.
In total, more than 97 thousand people in nine prefectures received evacuation orders.
