Air defense forces shot down more than 50 attack drones of the Shahed-136/131 type. On New Year’s Eve, more than 60 drones were recorded flying over the region. About 30 UAVs were shot down in the Odessa region alone. Natalya Gumenyuk, head of the joint coordination press center of the Southern Defense Forces, stated this during the telethon.
Gumenyuk emphasized that the combat work of the air defense forces again proved that even a downed Shahed can carry many dangers, because the Russians direct these drones through residential areas. It happened that downed UAVs reached the ground or hit a building, creating a powerful blast wave that destroyed objects around.
The State National Security Service reported that on New Year’s Eve, border guards destroyed five Shaheds. Four drones were landed by border guards of the Odessa detachment, and another by military personnel of the State Border Guard Service.
Let us recall that on January 1, Russia attacked Ukraine with a record number of Shahed-type drones. The enemy launched 90 Shahed-136/131 attack drones in four directions, but the air defense forces managed to destroy 87 of the 90 drones.
