Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will step down from her royal position on January 14, 2024 and hand over the throne to the prince.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced in her New Year’s speech that she is stepping down as king after a 52-year reign. The press service of the royal family reported this on December 31.

“Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II announced this evening in her New Year’s address that Her Majesty will abdicate as Queen of Denmark on 14 January 2024 and hand over the throne to His Highness the Hereditary Prince,” the royal household said.

The queen explained her decision due to health problems.

“In February of this year, I had a major operation on my back. Everything went well, thanks to the qualified medical staff who took care of me. The operation inevitably led to reflection on the future – if only now is the time to pass the responsibility on to the next generation. I have decided now is the time On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will retire as Queen of Denmark,” said Margrethe II .
