The conscription was carried out in accordance with the decree of dictator Vladimir Putin of September 29 on conscription. 130 thousand people were called up for military service. Most of the conscripts were assigned to training formations and military units. At the same time, conscripts from the fall 2022 conscription were dismissed. This is stated in a new report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The Russian dictatorship assured that conscripts would not be sent to the temporarily occupied Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye or Kherson regions or recruited to participate in hostilities in Ukraine.
According to analysts, since the first months of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, conscripts have not participated in hostilities. However, these conscripts guard the state border of Russia with Ukraine.
ISW believes that the Russian command is unlikely to use conscripts to participate in combat operations in Ukraine due to fears that this could cause discontent within the country.
Let us recall that in December the Belarusian Armed Forces, with the support of the Russian military command, deployed several battalions and tactical groups in the Brest and Gomel regions.
