Many European countries, including Germany, rely heavily on Russia’s gas supplies to meet their energy needs.
German Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said Russian energy giant Gazprom’s decision to reduce natural gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline was political. This was reported by The Local.
Gazprom announced on Tuesday that it would reduce gas supplies through the pipeline by about 40%, and blamed the German company Siemens for wrong “fixes”.
Robert Habek said Gazprom’s move was “a political decision, not a technically rational one.” He noted that Germany was aware of the need to maintain the pipeline, but added that the first set of maintenance works would not take place until the autumn.
At the same time, these activities do not require a 40% reduction, Habek says.
Many European countries, including Germany, rely heavily on Russia’s gas supplies to meet their energy needs.
Since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, European countries have sought to reduce their reliance on Russia’s energy imports, but have split opinions about the imposition of the fuel embargo. After the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the German opposition called on the current German authorities to deny Russia’s gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.
Earlier, Russian Gazprom demonstrated its unreliability by stopping gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria in violation of the terms of the contracts.
