Officials said the reluctance was unacceptable and expressed concern that it was hampering Ukraine’s military efforts.
Former UK defense ministers called on Rishi Sunak’s government to stop dithering and quickly announce how much military aid the country will provide to Ukraine by 2024. The Telegraph writes about this on Tuesday, December 26.
Former ministers Michael Fallon, Ben Wallace, Liam Fox and Gavin Williamson have called for at least £2.3 billion in aid for Ukraine in 2024, equal to aid in 2022 and 2023.
Former British defense officials stressed that by doing so, Britain “risks abandoning its leadership in support of Kyiv for no apparent reason” while Ukraine could be “entering its darkest period.”
“The country must show a long-term commitment to Ukraine. Britain can allocate £2.5 billion for 2024 and a further £2.5 billion for 2025,” they urged.
At the same time, the publication wrote that the aid announcement for 2024 is likely to be made as part of the budget process expected in March.
It was previously known that the UK, together with its partners, is implementing an Emergency Assistance Plan for Ukraine over the winter. It cost £127 million.
British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said the government would support British defense companies “helping countries like Ukraine” because it was in London’s interests.
