Israel launched an offensive against Hamas after the terrorist group carried out an unprecedented attack in southern Israel on October 7. About 1,200 people in Israel, most of them civilians, were killed.
The IDF is expanding its operations in southern and central Gaza, and the military will soon eliminate all Hamas battalions in the northern part of the strip. This was announced on Tuesday, December 26, by the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Herzi Ha-Levi, writes The Times of Israel.
“We have eliminated many terrorists and commanders, some of them have surrendered to our forces. We have destroyed a lot of underground infrastructure and weapons,” said Ga-Levi.
At the same time, he noted that in a densely populated urban area, where terrorists are wearing civilian clothes, it cannot be certain that the Israeli army will neutralize all the terrorists.
“This war pursues necessary and difficult goals, it takes place in difficult territory. Therefore, the war will last many months, and we will work in different ways so that what has been achieved can be preserved by long time… We said from the beginning that it will take many months, and we believe that “our estimates are accurate. So the time frame will be long,” he said.
He added that the IDF “will not allow a return to the Seventh of October” and will create a security line.
“There are no magical solutions, no shortcuts to completely dismantling a terrorist organization, but there is a stubborn and determined fight. And we are very, very determined,” Ga-Levi emphasized.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named three conditions that must be met to end the war against Palestinian Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
