The UN Security Council approved a resolution calling for a humanitarian pause between Israel and Hamas and an increase in aid to Gaza.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to expand the supply of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip throughout its territory. 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council voted for the resolution, Russia and the United States abstained. Reuters wrote this on Friday, December 22.
Resolution 2720 calls for “immediate and sustained humanitarian pauses and corridors that will allow full, rapid and unimpeded access to victims and ensure rescue and recovery, and calls for immediate and unconditional release of all captives and provision of humanitarian access.”
The United States of America (USA), Israel’s supporter and main ally, threatened to veto the UN Security Council resolution because the resolution did not condemn terrorist attacks by Hamas (identified as a terrorist group ).
According to the adopted resolution, humanitarian aid must be delivered to Gaza through all available routes and channels. The resolution emphasizes the commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict and the creation of a Palestinian state.
The resolutions, according to international laws, are legally binding.
We remind you that on December 1, the Israel Defense Forces announced the end of the truce with Hamas and the resumption of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government says Hamas is holding another 137 hostages in the Gaza Strip.
