According to BILD military expert Julian Roepke, the Ukrainian army has become increasingly reliant on the use of FPV kamikaze drones instead of classical artillery. One of the reasons is insufficient supplies of Western artillery shells.
Previously, the Ukrainian Armed Forces spent approximately 2-3 thousand 155 mm shells per day. Now this is no longer possible due to missing supplies. In addition, some Western guns fail.
The Ukrainian army tells me that it’s not just a lack of 155mm and 152mm artillery shells – nothing works. Western self-propelled howitzers are not designed for a real long war, but only for short missions, writes Roepke. “The situation of our artillery is catastrophic. There are no shells or working guns. The equipment supplied to Ukraine requires maintenance and repair, even if it has not been subjected to Russian shelling. Western 155mm shells are almost eight times more expensive than Russian 152mm shells.
Therefore, the Ukrainian Armed Forces switched to the massive use of cheap drones instead of artillery. One FPV drone costs approximately 500-600 euros.
The SBU firewood division reports that it destroys 20-30 units of armored vehicles of the Russian Armed Forces per week with drones.
The entire Ukrainian army uses about 1,000 kamikaze drones per day. Ukrainian authorities say they can now produce up to 50 thousand drones per month, that is, 600 thousand per year. Next year this figure is planned to increase to 1 million. The President of Ukraine promised this on December 19.
