Washington decided to take this step because Congress cannot quickly pass an aid package, and Ukraine lacks air defense systems. Japan is expected to approve policy changes as early as this week that would allow Japan to export dozens of missiles to the United States for the Patriot air defense system that is resupplying Washington’s stockpile. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing anonymous American officials.
It is noted that Washington will thus have the opportunity to send Ukraine more missiles for the Patriots, because the Japanese produce ammunition for this air defense system under license from Raytheon.
The new changes to Japan’s export rules will not directly mention the Patriot system, but will respond to a key request from US President Joe Biden’s administration, the sources said.
The Japanese government may announce changes to the legislation as early as Friday, December 22.
Let’s remember that Voice of America reported that the leaders of the US Senate said that, most likely, an agreement on an agreement to provide additional assistance to Ukraine and strengthen US border security will not be reached in the near future.
