The statement is said to have been made by Turkish Minister of Agriculture Vahit Kirisci at a meeting with deputies of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). According to him, negotiations are underway to overcome the global food crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic and the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine.
Agreements have already been reached in some countries, negotiations are underway in others, the minister said.
The leased lands will be used to plant agricultural products that cannot be produced in Turkey for climatic reasons or where production is insufficient.
For example, Sudan will grow tropical fruits and vegetables such as pineapple, mango, avocado and rapeseed, as well as sunflower, corn, cotton, sesame, sugarcane and alfalfa, which have little production in Turkey.
The publication states that due to the recent increase in feed prices, leased lands will be focused on the production of fodder plants.
“Turkey satisfies domestic demand for agricultural products, but if we are talking about exports, then it is necessary to rent land abroad. Modern products must be provided for export, “said Kirisci.
Recall that at the end of May it was reported that the world had 10 weeks of wheat reserves left. At the UN Security Council, it was announced that the war between Russia and Ukraine, which together produce about a third of the world’s wheat, has “only added fuel to a long-burning fire.”
