The Ukrainian’s opponent will be Australian George Kambosos, Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum announced.
The Lomachenko-Kambosos fight will take place in April in Australia. The final date and location of the fight remain unknown.
Lomachenko last entered the ring on the night of May 21, 2023. Vasily lost by unanimous decision to American Devin Gainey in the fight for the title of absolute world lightweight champion.
At the end of November, Gainey decided to change weight categories and dismissed all the major lightweight championship belts – WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO. Consequently, Lomachenko and Kambosos received a chance to compete for the vacant IBF belt, since they are the two main contenders according to the organization.
In his last fight, Kambosos defeated Britain’s Maxi Hughes in July 2023 to win the minor IBO lightweight title. Before this, the Australian suffered two consecutive defeats from Gainey, losing the title of absolute world champion, which he won in November 2021 by defeating American Teofimo Lopez.
In total, 35-year-old Lomachenko has 17 victories (11 by knockout) and 3 defeats in the professional ring. The 30-year-old Kambosos’ track record includes 21 victories (10 by knockout) and 2 defeats.
