The United States supports the sale of F-16 fighters to Turkey, but ties it to Sweden’s entry into NATO.
Washington will agree to give Turkey the opportunity to buy American F-16 aircraft, but at the same time they linked this sale to the unblocking of Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this in a briefing on Monday, December 18.
“We made it clear that we support the sale of F-16s to Turkey, Secretary of State Blinken made it clear again in a telephone conversation (with Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan – ed.),” said Miller.
At the same time, he emphasized that there are lawmakers in the US Congress “who associate this sale with Sweden’s accession to NATO.”
In this context, Miller stressed: “We need to see this entry as soon as possible.”
As reported, at the end of November, Turkey postponed the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO.
Let’s recall that in October Turkey began to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO. The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmus, signed the protocol.
