A strong earthquake on the night of Monday, December 18 occurred in northwest China. At least 111 people were killed and more than 200 were injured, China Central Television reported.
Eight deaths were initially reported, but this number has since increased.
Strong tremors with a magnitude of 6.2 struck overnight in the country’s northwestern Gansu province. In the epicenter and nearby areas there were damaged houses and infrastructure, as a result, electricity and water supply was lost in some communities. Jishishan County, located in the middle of the disaster zone, was the hardest hit.
For now, emergency services continue to clear the rubble and remove the consequences; the number of victims may increase.
