According to the diplomat, the idea that “it’s better to sign a bad agreement so that in the future you don’t have to sign a worse one” should be rejected.

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin does not want to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, at least until the presidential election in the United States. This was said on Friday, December 15, by former US Ambassador to the Russian Federation Michael McFaul in an online discussion of the Kyiv Security Forum.

“Putin is feeling very confident. A year ago he looked nervous because he was losing on the battlefield. And I have never seen him as insecure as he is now,” he said at the forum.

McFaul believes that despite the fact that the Russian army is suffering heavy losses in the war, Putin “doesn’t care” and will continue to send Russian soldiers “to the slaughter.”

According to the diplomat, the idea that “it’s better to sign a bad agreement so that in the future you don’t have to sign a worse one” should be rejected.

“There are some naive Americans who talk about it. But Putin will not conduct any negotiations, he believes that time is on his side. At least until the new American president comes to power,” McFaul said.

Zelensky earlier said that now is a “bad moment” for negotiations with Russia. The head of state is ready for a long war.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken argued that Ukraine is ready to negotiate with Russia if the Kremlin shows interest in diplomacy.
