The Wall Street Journal writes about this.
Wirecard, considered a competitor to PayPal, declared bankruptcy in 2020 – at the same time, 1.9 billion euros disappeared from its accounts, as well as top manager Marsalek. Later it turned out that he flew from Austria to Belarus by private plane, and then moved to Russia, where he now lives under a different name and under the protection of the FSB.
According to former employees of the company, Marsalek secretly collected information about German intelligence officers, because Wirecard was engaged in servicing them.
The publication’s sources also said that Marsalek used the company for illegal assistance to the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation and the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, namely, he transferred money to finance secret operations around the world. He is also suspected of collaborating with PIK Wagner.
