Changes to the law “On the organization of the system of national defense and military service” were initiated by the Ministry of Defense of Lithuania.
Lithuanian military personnel will be banned from entering Belarus, Russia and visiting the occupied territories of Ukraine. LRT wrote this on Friday, December 15, referring to former army commander, representative of the ruling conservatives, Arvydas Pocius.
He explained that some military personnel are authorized to work on classified or top-secret information, so their travel to these territories poses a potential risk.
“To avoid, I would say, unpleasant incidents, I think this amendment should be approved,” he said.
The publication clarified that 78 parliamentarians voted for the relevant amendments to the law “On the organization of the system of national defense and military service”; no one objected or abstained.
Next, the government must approve a list of countries or territories where military personnel are prohibited from entering.
In early December, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry announced that it had a preliminary list of such countries. This includes Russia and its annexed Crimea, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, the Transnistrian region of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Let’s recall that in November Lithuania provided another package of military aid to Ukraine. The Ukrainian military received 7.62×51 mm ammunition, remote detonation systems and winter equipment.
Lithuania has also reportedly ordered the first Leopard 2 tanks for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
