The Republican majority in the US House of Representatives voted to grant formal status to the ongoing impeachment investigation of Democratic President Joe Biden.

221 Republican congressmen voted for this decision against 212 Democratic members of parliament.
Republicans say they suspect Biden of personally benefiting from his 53-year-old son Hunter Biden’s deals with foreign partners, including Ukrainian ones, while he used the name and position of his father, then vice president.
The Republicans have not yet presented any evidence, although the story of these suspicions has been going on for several years.
The president himself, in a written statement, called the investigation a “political stunt” by Republicans.
As Reuters notes, this Republican initiative will still not be able to result in Biden’s removal from the presidency.
Even if the House of Representatives votes to impeach the president, then the Senate must formally convict him on these counts by a two-thirds vote, and this is practically impossible in the chamber, where Biden’s fellow Democrats have a majority of 51 to 49, the agency explains.
