Brussels announced Ukraine’s progress in rule of law reforms, judicial reform, improving public administration and fighting corruption, and called for the continuation of these efforts.
The Council of the European Union on Tuesday, December 12, issued conclusions on EU enlargement, which, in particular, discuss Ukraine’s progress towards the reforms necessary to obtain full membership in the EU.
“The Council of the EU notes the significant progress made by Ukraine towards achieving the goals for its candidacy status, despite the fact that Ukraine is under attack. The Council of the EU considers the European Commission’s report of 8 November regarding Ukraine and its recommendations and look forward to the upcoming discussion in the European Council on this matter,” the document said.
The representatives of the member states also noted that the EU is ready to assist Ukraine in carrying out reforms and their implementation, including the requirements for further progress towards EU membership, and is ready to support Ukraine in its recovery.
The Council of the EU noted Ukraine’s progress in rule of law reforms, judicial reform, improving public administration and fighting corruption, and encouraged Ukraine to continue such efforts. Special attention is paid to coordinating efforts to increase Ukraine’s energy and financial stability in the context of Russian military aggression.
“The Council of the EU reaffirms its strong condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the European Union’s unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within the borders recognized in world, as well as the inalienable right of self-defense against Russian aggression. The EU will continue to stand with the people in the fight against the ongoing Russian war as long as necessary,” the EU Council emphasizes its conclusions.
Let’s recall that on November 8, the European Commission published its annual report on EU enlargement, in which it recommended that the European Council begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
President Vladimir Zelensky said Ukraine expects a political decision from the European Council in December. But Hungary intends to block the EU’s decision.
